Good day Oppo, I’m looking to pick up a $500 (Canadian) or so car that I and my wife can learn to drive stick on and maybe keep for a while to hoon about. Any recommendations on what to get or to look out for?

I mean I guess you can’t be too picky at that point but if the ad says it runs fine and it’s a reliable model then you should be good? At that price range too I guess they come and go fast so keep an eye out.

May be random but the ford probe or 626 turbo or na I guess.
Buddy I work with was givin a ford probe turbo from family or somthing. Total piece of shit beater car but definitely looks like a lot of fun to whip around and not give a shit about.
Or the obligatory Miata. You can find them for very cheap every once and a while.

In my searches, I’ve come across a couple civics and a tonne of Corolla’s. They seem like a pretty good bet as long as they’re running.

I suggest a small truck. Ranger, B-series, Tacoma, Frontier, etc. They are hard to kill, can be used to haul stuff, and the clutches are very forgiving.

Heavy torque steer when the VTEC boost kicks in yo though. Might not be ideal for a rookie wanting to learn.

I was also going to suggest an old truck or a Jeep XJ or something along those lines. Truck motors generally have flat torque curves with good low-rpm grunt, which coupled with low gears makes it easier to get moving without havung to rev it up so much and slip/burn the clutch. Trucks are usually built to take a lot of abuse as well.
I picked up a 4.0/5-speed XJ a few weeks ago for $700. I’ll probably just use it as a donor for my MJ, but I’ve been thinking about swapping the MJ’s auto back into it, fixing it up, and selling it, more to be able to practice rust repairs than anything else, but cost recovery’s always good I suppose. At any rate, the thing’s a friggen tractor compared to my Niva. Much longer shift throws, and with the 4.0's grunt, just shove it in a gear and it goes.
Speaking if the Niva, that also only cost me $1000. I see them go for $500 out East all the time.
